The Ex Racehorse

Ex Racehorses

Over the years in Australia alone, millions of horses have been bred for the racing industry.  Some horses, no matter how valuable or how well bred, may never be suitable enough to continue on with a career in racing.  Other horses may have completed their championships and may simply retire, with no place to go.

Many people like to believe that all race horses win some form of money and end up retired,  ‘fat and happy’ in a lush green paddock, when their racing careers have come to completion.  Sadly this is far from the truth.  Once an animal is deemed too slow for the track or not good enough to win races anymore, they are usually disposed of.

Unfortunately, as these horses are not educated outside of their careers in racing, they face a very bleak future.  There are not many people who are experienced enough, or are even willing to take on an un-educated ex-racehorse.

Cedars Springs Horses Inc. steps in to lend a kind hand and a warm heart for those horses who otherwise would have not gained a 'second chance' at life.  Offering a re-education and re-homing program, our aim is to help these animals obtain enough education to return to the community and serve a different purpose outside of racing.

 CSH Program

Cedar Springs Horses Inc.  takes in un-used or un-wanted racing horses from the racing industry and assists these horses in gaining a second chance at life.  We strive to rehabilitate, re-educate and re-train these animals into basic riding horses; and place them into compatible new homes. These Horses need our help!

Every placement of one of our ex racehorses ensures that we can continue helping out both the Standardbred and Thoroughbred race horse for many years to come.

The Ex Racehorse - Standardbred Horses

There are many misconceptions regarding the Standardbred Horse.  Many people never consider owning a Standardbred, let along riding one!  This breed is often known simply as the ‘trotter’ or ‘pacer’ and often thought of as only good for racing!  The most common misconception is that these horses are unable to have a natural gait.  This is often due to the lack of knowledge with the breed.  With the correct re-education and training program, they can learn to walk, trot and canter like any other horse.

Many Standardbred horses that enter our stables are not saddle broken, so our strict re-education and riding program is paramount for their re-homing.

Standardbred Horses are a very level headed breed.  They are normally very quiet and suited to almost any type of rider.  They have fabulous temperaments and very willing natures.  And because they have spent most of their lives in a training atmosphere, they have wonderful ground manners and will stand all day for their brushing and general grooming, without fuss!

Standardbred Horses are suited to people wanting to adopt their first horse, right through to people who have had years of experience and require a quiet 'all rounder'.  And we have had many horses leave our program to go to compete at the highest levels of showing!

Standardbred Horses come in many shapes and sizes, mimicking the builds of breeds such as Thoroughbreds, Stock Horses, Quarter Horses, Morgans and Arabians.  They can be as small as 13 hands and grow up to 18 hands in height.

Standardbred clubs and associations are popping up everywhere, and this breed is now being shown easily and successfully in all areas of riding!  There are even Standardbred classes’ at most major shows!

Cedar Springs Horses Inc. are not the only organisation to realise the potential and beauty of the Standardbred Breed, and welcome you to meet a few for yourself!

The Ex Racehorse - Thoroughbred Horses

Like Standardbred Horses, the Thoroughbred Horse is often misunderstood.  Many believe that you have to be a very experienced rider to enjoy this breed.  Although people have been riding and enjoying these horses for many years, some still view them as better suited to someone else.  On endless occasions, we have heard people make the comment “Once a racehorse, always a racehorse!”  Or “I am interested in a horse, as long as it’s not a Thoroughbred!”

The lack of experience with Thoroughbred Horses often leads people to believe that they are all very high strung animals, and only suited for racing.

As the Thoroughbred Horse has been around longer than the Standardbred breed, they are somewhat better known in the equine world.  However, this has caused several different challenges with how people can view them.  This breed is often seen as high strung and not suitable for many riders.  But with the correct feeding regime and a solid re-education, Thoroughbred Horses make fantastic riding companions! We strive to educate individuals with our view that horses are like people; each horse has its own unique characteristic and temperament.  Some can have a 'mind of their' own at times, while others are as quiet and easy as a good pony.

Thoroughbred Horses are a well known breed that comes in many shapes and sizes.  The height average can range between 14 to 18 hands.  And depending on the breeding, these horses range from a very stockily built horse to a more refined and leaner body shape.  They have a very intelligent nature and tend to bond with their owners incredibly well.  Thoroughbred Horses can be very good family pets and grow very attached to people as well as other horses.

At Cedar Springs Horses Inc. we understand Thoroughbred Horses.  And we have had some amazing animals in our stables. From basic riding hacks that everyone can enjoy, right up to the top show hack, eventer or show jumper, a Thoroughbred horse is a very versatile breed.

Cedar Springs Horses Inc. work very hard to ensure that any Thoroughbred Horse that you may find in our stables, is level headed and trainable.  We welcome you to have a look at these beautiful animals!
