Assessments

After re-education, the horses available for re-homing through our program are put through a strict assessment period before they are released.  As our goal is ensure that our horses go on to permanent and caring homes, we strive to rehabilitate, re-educate and rate suitability for each horse that enters our stables. Our testing period may vary for each horse but after re-education, we strive to rate each animal’s ability through the following testing criteria.

• Full and complete strapping and tacking up (includes rugging)
• Leading and tying
• Riding in heavy traffic
• Riding with other horses and alone
• Bush tracking and road riding
• Working around barking dogs and children
• Loose rein riding and practice in 'halting' with minimal effort
• Where possible, riding in every type of weather ie: wind and rain
• General lunging and ground work
• Training in gaits and leg aids
• Float loading and unloading
• Feet handling, shoes, and teeth care

After working with our horses in all of these areas, we are better able to assist you with explaining each horse to our best ability.  Most horses pass these tests with flying colours, while some excel in areas where others may not.  We will always be as honest as we can in explaining each horse and how they performed with each test.

The assessment testing period makes it possible to clarify each horse’s specific attributes, ensuring that both horse and rider are compatible.

We do not want to 'sell' you a horse, we would rather team together to decide if the horse is right for you!  Our assessment outcomes will assist you in understanding each horse’s abilities.

If a horse has not completed his or her full assessment, they are rarely released for immediate adoption, but we may show them on the website as "horses coming soon." Please be patient, as we want to know everything about each horse before they are released.

Appointments

We set appointments firstly to ensure that the horse that you are interested in will be there for you on the day that you visit.  Once an appointment is booked in for a certain horse, all other appointments for that horse are booked after you see him or her first!  We also require at least an 'hour and a half' with you and the horse, to ensure that you are both a 'correct-fit.' This is a NO RUSH appointment, and we will not attempt to 'sell' you a horse at any time.  Based on your experience, and the information given, we will together decide if a horse and rider are a compatible fit.

We do take a lot of time in re-educating these horses into new riding companions, so we do not want you to end up with a horse that does not suit you. Otherwise the horse would end up exactly where it began... ‘unwanted!’  So please prepare your questions before arrival so that we can cover all aspects of each individual horse.  No question is a silly one!

Cedar Springs Horses Inc. want to ensure that you are able to come and meet the horse that we feel may be compatible for you.  We will take the time to explain in great detail each horse’s capabilities, and ensure the time to allow you to also evaluate a prospective horse.

This is a no obligation appointment, but we do ask that if you cannot make your appointment for any reason, that you contact us as soon as possible.  This ensures that we can give the appointment to someone else who may also be compatible for that horse.

Purchasing Sight-Unseen

We can adopt horses into new homes without the owners actually meeting them first. This is particularly common in country areas, located a great distance from our stables, or interstate. We are eager to share all of our knowledge about each horse, and ask that you take the time to go through all of the testing with us.  This can take some time and references may be required.  Also, if there are any children that may be riding the horse, that we have the opportunity to speak with them as well.  This ensures that we know as much as you do, about the match of horse and rider!  It can be incredibly difficult to get these horses back to the stables if we are not honest with each other about every possible scenario.  Please be aware that whenever possible, it will always be better to meet a horse in person, but we do understand that due to location you may be unable, and will work with you to ensure that both horse and rider are a complimentary match.

Thank you for your support!
