Horse Tales

Many ex- racers that enter our stables are in fairly good condition, but occasionally we receive a special case that requires a longer term rehabilitation program. It is not uncommon for these particular horses to be malnourished, abused, or require extra veterinary care or surgery.

The horses listed below have made their journey with us through this rehabilitation program. Most have gone on to find caring new homes all across Australia, while others have stayed on permanently, to grace our own CSH paddocks.

June 2008 - The Arrival of 'Sully'

Today we welcomed a very young soul into our care. This is an uncommon occurrence for us here at the stables as this young lad has already been deeemed 'unsuitable' for a career in racing; yet he has not even reached the tender age of two!  Not even old enough to race, Sully has already been cast aside for something  potentially faster than he.

Meet the latest addition to the CSH stables, a young colt named 'Sully' who is just a year and a half old.

January 2007 -  'Dudley' Gets His Second Chance

Dudley came in to our care, not too different from many of our other horses.  He  was an unwanted ex racer,  headed on a one way journey to the knackery.  And although this boy was in very good condition,  there was a slight difference that made our job with Dudley a little more difficult than the rest.  Dudley is a 7 year old full fledged stallion!

November 2006 - Loving a Baby 'Mouse'
CSH were alerted to a group of starving horses that had been left to die in a bare paddock. While retrieving the horses, we were devastated to discover that one of these poor souls was just a baby, no older than 10 or 11 months!  The drought had arrived thick and fast and without a heart, someone had decided that these poor animals were not even worth feeding.  These horses were in such a starving state, that many of them no longer had manes or tails (the others had chewed them away, trying to fill the void in their aching bellies!) Read the story.

August 2006 - Rescuing 'Possum'

Possum came into our care today when a very special friend of the CSH stables was able to rescue her from her previous owner and bring her here to us. She is an eleven year old bay Thoroughbred mare who stands approx 16.2hh. Although we know nothing of her past or exactly where she came from, Possum has shown an incredibly quiet nature so far and has settled in immediately. Read the story.

July 2006 - Lending a Helping Hand for 'Daisy'

Today was a huge day at the stables! A phone call from one of our CSH 'spotters' produced a large truck load of Standardbred ex-racers, that were on their way to the knackery.  There were the usual stories of horses being far too slow for the track, youngsters that had never gotten named and others that had been thrown out in a paddock and forgotten about, after their careers on the track had come to an end.  ALL of these horses had been bred for the racing industry and ALL of them were now unwanted!  June 2006 - Running Out of Feed for 'Bobby'!

Today was a very distressing day, and one in which we have been scratching our heads over! A very gentle gelding named 'Bobby' entered our stables, for the mere fact that his owner was 'running out of feed', and he needed to 'go'. Now, we are not sure just exactly what that means around here? Does 'running out of feed' mean that there is literally no feed left in Australia? Or does it mean that someone out there just did not plan ahead before buying a horse that would actually cost money to feed! Read the story

 April 2006 - Liberating 'Libby'

In our latest rescue case,  'Libby', (a Young Thoroughbred mare),  is a classic example of a true wastage case that needed our help! Some horses that are bred to race, never get to see as much as a the barrier on a race track, let alone a jockey.  Libby is a sweet 2 year old chestnut TB mare who was headed for the knackery due to no fault of her own. She simply was not fast enough for a career in racing.  Read the Story

March 2006 - Meet our newest 'Buddy'

On a recent trip to purchase some ex-racehorses (that had failed at the track), we came across a young fellow that had a pretty horrific injury. He had run through a fence (ripping his leg open) and was deemed to be too tough of a challenge to get back onto the track. 'Buddy' as we now know him, had cut a very large chunk of his leg away and eventhough this had done nothing to make him unsound for future use, he had been quickly cast away. Read the story

October 2005 - Meet 'Cricket'

Cricket's story began for us about two weeks ago when we were alerted to some horses that were in desperate need of help. Cricket had been literally left in a paddock for the past twelve months, with several other very well bred Thoroughbred mares, without any care at all. We discovered that the mares had also given birth and had wild yearling foals still attached to them. Read the story

 March 2005- Meeting 'Jana'

Jana has been resting in a paddock for about two weeks for a bit of R&R before going on to Trish for her re-education as a new riding horse! (This lovely little horse has turned out to be just another 'discarded ex-racer' that could never cut the grade in the industry!) But we will work very hard with Jana in hope that one day, we shall find her that loving 'life' home that she deserves! Read the story

 January 2005 - Meeting 'Thunder'

We were very troubled when we picked up this gelding today. We don't know much about his past, (other than that he had been caught in a fence once and has a bit of a scar on his front fetlock), but were very happy to bring him home to our stables His whole 'personality' seems to have been taken from him, and he looks as though he has given up on all hope.  Read the story

October 2004 - Our 'Faith' is being restored!

Today we were unsure what we were going to do with a horse named "Faith", that entered our stables on a moments notice! Her owner had passed away suddenly and the family didn't know what to do with her. She had been nothing more than an 'unridden pet' for a number of years, and required quite a bit of re-education if she was ever going to be re-homed.  Read the story

June 2004 - Our Newest 'Angel'!

Angels come in many shapes and forms, and unfortunately so does neglect! Our newest "Angel", once a grand matriach, producer of champion offspring, has fallen from  the proverbial breeding tree to make way for younger broodmares. Angel was discarded to the 'out bin' and headed for the knackery to cull the 'out-of-date-broodies', and brought into a safe-haven by us at Cedar Springs Horses. Read the story

 May 2004 - Introducing 'Karma'

As one chapter ends, another begins, that is the normal cycle of life, but for one young mare, her 'karma' in life, seemed to be mistreatment. Until now..... Tomorrow the little bay Thoroughbred mare now named "Karma" will spend the next few weeks in my care, taking the place of a much re-habilitated "Chance", who is onto the next stage of his journey as a riding horse.  April 2004 - A 'Chance' for a Gelding Down on His Luck!

This is a story of a horse named "Chance"... A bay gelding that had once been a beautiful race horse, but has been long since forgotten about! This is a tale of a horse "saved", and the path that it will take to bring him back!
