Our Beginnings

Cedar Springs Horses Inc. was originally a ‘one man’ plight which began in the early 1990's, after our president Laura Stoikos, of Whittlesea Victoria witnessed the non existent life of ex racehorses when their careers in the industry had come to completion. Within her own racing career, she experienced many of these beautiful equines being shamelessly destroyed when they no longer met the demands of the racing industry. It was thought that “once a racehorse, always a racehorse” and that these animals served no purpose after they were deemed unsuitable for racing. After realising that the majority of ex-racehorses were being put to death when they no longer served their racing purpose, she vowed to do something about it and to give these horses the second chance that they deserved. With not much money to spare, she began to do her part by purchasing just one ex racehorse, fondly known as ‘Max’ when he was due to be slaughtered after he had proven not fast enough for a racing career. Max later became the founder of our Cedar Springs Horses program and along with Laura, assisted many other horses through a re-education program that saved their lives. It did not take long before the word spread, and a Cedar Springs - Horse was well sought after in the community. By the year 2000, thousands of ex racehorses had been placed into new and happy homes and an official ex racehorse re-homing program had blossomed. |

Our Mission Statement |
The care and well being of any ex-race horse, after their career in the racing industry has come to completion. To rescue any ex-racehorse doomed for the slaughterhouse because of failure on the race track, and to retrain and re-educate these horses for individual use outside of racing. Any excess monies received, fund our program for the rescue and rehabilitation of maltreated and abused horses. Our mission is to minimise the exploitation of ex-racehorses and to give these animals a real life after the various sporting associations have finished with them. |
Our Ongoing Aim |
To come to the aid of as many ex racehorses as possible that are doomed for slaughterhouses because of a lack of talent on a race track. To continue to raise public awareness regarding the welfare of animals after thier careers in the racing industry have come to completion. To educate racehorse owners and trainers in believing that horses can, and do have a life after racing. To stop the current attitude that horses should be put down or disposed of once their careers in the racing industry have come to completion. To raise enough awareness regarding the Thoroughbred and Standardbred ex-race horse to enable the public to embrace each breed; and bring to an end the ignorance and belief that these animals are not suited for a purpose outside of racing. |
